Sweden’s JAS 39 Gripen: No Advanced Fighter Better Suited to Ukraine’s Needs
Sweden’s JAS 39 Gripen: A Better Fit for Ukraine’s Needs
Concerns have emerged regarding the suitability of the F-16 for Ukraine’s rough airfields, where debris could potentially be sucked into the fighters’ low-hanging air intakes. The ruggedness of the Gripen makes it a more suitable option.
Despite these concerns, Ukrainian pilots are undergoing training to operate the F-16s supplied to Ukraine.
The Swedish government intends to request its military to explore the possibility of sending Gripen planes to Ukraine.
The JAS 39 Gripen E model is currently in service with Sweden and Brazil. Each airframe costs $85 million, and the model boasts a top speed of Mach 2.
